About the Author

Tommie McNeil was born in Galveston on December 8, 1950. He grew up in Hitchcock, Texas, and graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1969. He went on to attend Alvin Jr. College in Alvin, Texas, and American University in Washington, DC. In 1995, he completed his 270 education hours for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling at Alvin Community College.

In 2007, McNeil received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for contributions to his community and in 2012, received the Village Gatekeeper Award from the Nia Cultural Center for his work on issues of HIV/AIDS and substance abuse.

He has been a volunteer in the Texas Prison System for Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and has been a guest lecturer at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Clinical Trials, the Webster University Counseling/University of Minnesota Divinity School in San Antonio, Texas.

McNeil is a world traveler who has visited Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, and 20 countries in Europe. He was executive producer of the play Before It Hits Home by Cheryl L. West in 2008, performed for free at Levin Hall at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He has a daughter, two grandsons, and three great-granddaughters.
